Best of December

Well, I came down with Covid in early January and it really knocked the wind out of my sails. I've run the full gamut of symptoms -- fever, chills, sore throat, congestion, coughing -- just how you want to kick off a new year.

I did, however, go the entirety of 2023 without as much as a cold, so I fully expect to make up for that in 2024.

I decided to start a new monthly "best of" blog series.

Without further ado...

Best of December

Best thing I read: The Covenant of Water

Finally, a book that has brought me out of my post-Demon Copperhead slump!!! I would recommend it to everyone, but coming in at 700 pages long, this book isn't for the faint of heart. It took me one month of reading, but it was a story that made me feel so many emotions and the writing was phenomenal. There was a scene between a husband and wife after their young son died in a tragic accident. Both parents blamed each other and oh my goodness...the destruction of their marriage following the accident may have been the best internal dialogue I've ever read. I felt like I was living this story it had me so enthralled.

Best thing I watched: That would be the Youtube/podcast "tosh show," where comedian Daniel Tosh interviews regular people; specifically, this interview with his wife's OBGYN. It's hilarious and the humor is right up my ally.  And, it's a small thing, but the fact that Brian would send me the link to this and know I'd find it hilarious made me feel like Brian gets me. I guess it should be a given because we're married and all, but it's still a good feeling, to feel gotten.

Best thing I did: I'm embarrassed to even admit this, but my interior car light was out for several months as well as my key fob battery. After having to use a physical key to manually unlock my driver's side door then press "unlock" for Cam each time we got in (yes, my car is old), you would think that changing the battery would be a simple, five-minute task that I would do right away. But no. I waited MONTHS. I think it was actually close to an entire year. At night my car would be completely dark because the interior lightbulbs were out, so I'd be fumbling around a dark car trying to use an actual key to unlock doors while usually carrying no fewer than five items in my arms and absolutely hating life.

So I finally did it last month. I ordered lightbulbs and a battery from Amazon and once they arrived it took me five minutes to remedy the situation and now I'm loving life again.

Best purchase: I bought this mug for somebody else as a Christmas present, but then decided I liked it so much that I would just keep it. I use it everyday and it brings me joy. I feel a bit guilty that I didn't give it to the original intended recipient, but I can't live in the past. What's done is done.

Best thing Cam said:

Cam opening a Christmas gift from my parents: a 1,000 piece puzzle of the U.S. Presidents.

Me: "This is great! We can do it in February for President's Day and it can help us learn all the presidents. Cam, do you know the first President of the United States?"

Cam: "Yes. Michael Jordan."
