February Goals
If you live near me in North Carolina, then you're likely feeling the pain of the last three weeks. Snow has fallen, routines have been thrown out the window, and it feels like our family togetherness quota has been filled for at least the next 6 months.
On the Calendar This Month:
1. A Valentine's Date Night with Brian! We have reservations at Ruth's Chris.
2. A "Stars of Honor" event with Cam, who is being recognized for school achievement ("hard work, high character, and outstanding achievements"). Proud of him!
3. Apex Community Dance! This is an odd one, but my Articles Club crew wants to head to a community dance together. We may be the youngest people there by 30 years; we'll see. Either way, should be a fun time!
What I Read in January:
Wow wow wow! January was my month when it came to books!!! After what felt like a year-long reading lull, I kicked off this year with three great books that I absolutely loved.
1. In an Instant by Suzanne Redfearn. I got this on a whim at the library as I waited on other book holds, and I went in with no (maybe low?) expectations based on the description, but boy was I wrong. I flew through this book in just a few days. It felt more like a thriller than the description led me to believe. This started 2026 off on the right foot!
2. Die with Zero by Bill Perkins. Again, maybe it was the low expectations I had going into this one, but I loved this book. I had heard a bit about it beforehand from Brian and also watched Bill Perkins on a podcast. I didn't think I related much to him personally, and he didn't strike me as someone with a good morals, so I wasn't too hyped on reading this but Brian (and a lot of other blogs I follow) recommended it. The book really got me thinking about my life goals and how to best spend our money. There were so many interesting facts to ponder about how to maximize your time, money, and health, and this book is definitely one that opens up a lot of discussion topics with friends and family. Highly recommend!
3. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. You guys!!!! I just cannot get over this book. I am apparently three years late to the Fourth Wing craze. I didn't even know this book existed until last month. I was still waiting on other library holds and saw that this had very good Amazon reviews. Once I started reading it, I could not stop. I was so invested in this story! And yes, it's fantasy genre with dragons and gryphons (still have no clue what a gryphon is lol). Not my usual cup of tea, but it reminds me of The Hunger Games and Divergent, both books I loved. It definitely has some graphic sex scenes towards the end, but aside from that, it reads like a Young Adult novel. As much as I loved it, I do not plan on reading the next two of the trilogy. I feel like the next two books will just be downhill from here.
What I'm Loving Lately:
1. Brian set up biweekly house cleaning as my Christmas gift and they came for the first big deep clean last Saturday. I'm not thrilled at the expense of this (very high!), but I must say that they did a really good job.
2. The deep clean mentioned above was scheduled for last Saturday. I assumed they would cancel given the weather forecast, but alas, they did not cancel and showed up bright and early. I was highly annoyed given that we needed to be out of the house all day, I had nothing planned, and the weather kept saying it was going to snow. Well, we had an impromptu family day and went to breakfast, walked around the mall, and watched a movie.....and no snow came until late that night! This was a good reminder for me that you don't always need a plan. We had a really nice day. :)
Goals for February:
1. Finish Brooke and Cam's baby books
2. Renew passport
3. Order family photo albums to organize printed photos
