Sermon note: The best way to love people is to give them my time.
Am I giving God my very best when it comes to how I spend my time?
I've heard it said that children spell "love" T-I-M-E, but I think that's true for all of us.
It was during a Father's Day sermon when I heard a story about Charles Adams, grandson of John Adams and son of John Quincy Adams. He served as a Massachusetts state senator, a US Congressman and ambassador under Abraham Lincoln. He kept a daily journal and encouraged his children to do the same. Brooks, his son, followed his advice and began journaling at a young age.
In one entry, Brooks wrote: Went fishing with my father today, the most glorious day of my life. The day was so glorious that Brooks continued to talk about that particular day for the next thirty years. But later, when comparing journals with his father, on that same day his father had written: Went fishing with my son, a day wasted.
When I get to the very end of my life, I won't wish I had worked longer hours, scrolled through more internet posts, or purchased more things. All that matters is the people I love.
May I always give generously of my time, count it all joy, and never waste a day.
